Your water company wants you to install a water meter to help save water and make sure there’s enough for everyone. With climate change and a growing population, the demand for water is increasing. Installing water meters helps the company detect leaks and lets you track your water usage, which can help you save money.

Currently, 60% of households in England and Wales have a water meter, and 14% have a smart one. The goal is for 65% of households to have smart meters by 2050.

In areas where there’s serious pressure on water supplies, the Water Industry Act 1991, allows water companies to install water meters in homes as part of its effort to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable water supply. This is known as compulsory metering. You can use our tool to check if your area is facing water stress.
