We all use water every day, often without even thinking about it. The water used to supply our homes comes from a number of sources, from reservoirs, rivers and streams to underground sources called aquifers.

When demand for water is high compared to the amount of rainfall and water available in the environment, we risk taking too much water out of the environment and harming the rivers, streams and wildlife that we love.

If you live in England, the Environment Agency describes this as ‘serious water stress’.

If you live in Wales, please note that Natural Resources Wales do not currently use the same classification of water stress. You can find out more information about water resources where you live on the Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water or Hafren Dyfrdwy websites.
