Save water in the garden

It's possible to have a colourful and thriving garden without using large amounts of water

Our tips to help you save water

  • Use rain water to water the garden

Use a water butt to capture and store rain water to water your garden. The average house roof in the UK collects enough rain water in a year to fill about 450 water butts.
  • Water early or late

Water your garden in the early morning or in the evening to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation. Focus on watering the soil so the water goes straight to the roots, where it is most needed.
  • Leftover cooking water?

Cooking pasta? Cool down the excess water to reuse in the garden.
  • Water with ice cubes

Use leftover ice cubes from drinks to water indoor plants, or use leftover drinking water.
  • Use mulch

Cover beds and borders with mulch, wood chips or gravel to prevent evaporation and cut the amount of water you need to water your plants.
  • Get stuck into those weeds

Rooting out weeds from your flowerbeds will help to ensure your plants make the most of the moisture in the soil.
  • Trim with care

Lawns can survive longer periods of dry weather if you do not cut them too short. Adjusting the height of your lawnmower blades will help with this.
  • Choose warm weather plants

Choose flowers and shrubs that thrive in hot and dry conditions. Your local garden centre can help you choose the best fit for your local soil and weather conditions.
  • Wash your dog outside

If you own a dog consider washing them outside instead of the bath during warmer weather. Excess water can be soaked up through the grass or be used to water the plants.
