Drinking water in England and Wales remains among the safest in the world, a new report has confirmed.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) published its latest Annual Report on July 9.

During the last year water companies have carried out millions of tests to check that our tap water complies with all the stringent water quality standards set by European Union and national legislation.

The report reveals that in 2014 99.96 per cent of these standards were passed in England and 99.98 per cent in Wales.

We welcome these findings which are a credit to the DWI and the water companies. We hope they will give consumers even greater confidence in the quality and safety of their tap water – which remains over 500 times cheaper than bottled water.

The DWI Annual Report also features a summary of the improvements that have been made to water supplies since the water industry was privatised more than 25 years ago.
